it's an animated art film about a french peasant woman named jeanne living under feudalism and the cruelty she is treated with under that system and her reclamation of her pride and rise to power in her local community though selling her soul to the devil and performing witchcraft.
a very flawed movie for sure but also worth watching at least once if you can stomach it imo. the visuals are stunning, but not afraid to get ugly and horrific when needed, OST is very good (carries the whole movie tbh).
the main sexual assault scene is graphic but abstracted in a way that places emphasis on the brutality of sexual violence and is used to convey jeannes emotional experience as a victim, it's very far from visualy realistic, but i must make it clear that while i have never experienced SA i would imagine this scene could still be extremely triggering to some because of how viceraly and bluntly the imagery dispicts jeannes suffering. it's very violent, the gore of the scene is metaphorical and rendered as detailess solid flat red color, but still VERY upsetting to watch.
later in the movie there are several scenes appearing to be sexual assault, or at the very very least coercion or gravely dubious consent depending on how you interpret it, between jeanne and the devil, these are not depicted in the same way, but its kind of complicated because the devil is jeanne. the devil serves both as sort of a metaphor for jeannes sexuality and also as satan. like... from the bible i guess? he grants her wealth and influence grows more and more phallic as jeanne grows more and more powerful within her society.
i don't wanna spoil the whole movie but as dated as it is, it's still an interesting film and i find a lot of the discussion around it fascinating. if you look it up, there are several good articles by women out there analyzing the movie and some of the feminist ideas behind it, where it delivered, where it fell short. i find it very interesting to read what men thought of it too because sometimes, when men have takes on this movie, it has so much potential to just turn into self report lol.
